Tifton police respond to incidents

TIFTON — Local law enforcement agencies responded to several incidents over the weekend, including a burglary at a local convenience store.

According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, an officer reported Sunday that he responded to an alarm activation at the Mystic Food Store on Ferry Lake Road. He reported that when arriving on scene, he discovered that the front door glass was broken out. The business was cleared by officers and no one was located inside, the report states.

A witness reported that she saw a Hispanic male wearing a blue hoodie and khaki shorts standing by the business sign near the road. Also, she reported that another Hispanic male wearing a blue hoodie and black shorts with a white stripe ran up to the business and threw a brick through the door. He then went inside the store and exited with a black backpack in his hands. She told police that both suspects then ran from the scene.

The following items were stolen: 18 packs of Newport Kings cigarettes valued at $3.69 each, 20 packs of Marlboro 100s cigarettes valued at $3.49 each, 20 two-pack White Owl cigars valued at 99 cents each, two packs of Maverick cigarettes valued at $3.69 each and 30 Swisher Sweets cigars valued at $1.19 each.

In another matter, an officer at the Tift County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday that he responded to the New River Flea Market in reference to a theft. The report states that items valued at $500 were recovered. James Edward McCant, 63, 1704 Garrison Ave., was arrested and charged with theft by taking.

In other unrelated cases:

• A woman reported Sunday that someone forced entry into the residence located in the 1700 block of Garrison Avenue and stole property valued at $190.

• A man who lives in the 800 block of Highway 125 South reported Saturday that someone broke into his home, defecated on his bed and stole a pistol from his bathroom.



• A woman reported Friday that two black males tried to break into a man’s residence located on Bellview Circle. She told police that she heard a window break and saw two black males running from the area towards Tifton Eldorado Road. She stated that she contacted the homeowner and 911. No items were taken from the residence. The woman described one of the suspects as having dreads, a light complexion and was wearing a gray hoodie. She reported that the other suspect had a darker complexion and dreads also.

• A man reported Saturday that he was attacked by his girlfriend after he returned to his home on South Park Avenue from getting some food. He told police from the Emergency Room at the hospital that his girlfriend threw a brick through one of the windows on his vehicle. She then struck him in the face with the brick after he told her that it was over between them, he reported. The report states that the man received a laceration over his left eye, where he received three to four stitches.

• A woman reported Sunday that someone stole several items from her vehicle while in the 800 block of Tyson Avenue. The report states that the doors were not locked.

• According to an incident report filed at the Tifton Police Department, during the investigation of a traffic stop in the area of 12th Street and Tift Avenue Monday, Christina Franks, 29, of Lenox and Christopher Franks, 24, of Tifton were arrested for possession of schedule IV prescription drug and possession of prescription pill not in the original container. Also, Christopher was charged with possession of marijuana.

• A woman reported Monday that someone broke out the glass in the front door of the Tift County Recreation Department on Victory Drive. The report states that it was unclear what object was used to break the glass, but it appeared that no entry was made to the building.

• Several incidents of vehicles being broken into were reported Monday morning on North Park Avenue and North Central Avenue. A woman who lives in the 2200 block of North Park Avenue reported that someone threw a brick through the passenger front window of her vehicle and stole her purse. A woman who lives in the 1400 block of North Central Avenue reported that someone pried open the front passenger side door on her vehicle and stole her purse. The report states that the door appeared to have been pried open with a flat-head screwdriver. Another woman at the same residence reported that someone also entered her vehicle and took her purse, as well as rummaged through her glove box and center console. She reported that she had left the back door/tail gate open. A man who lives in the 2200 block of North Park Avenue reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the center console. He reported that nothing was missing.

• An officer at the Tift County Sheriff’s Office responded to an alarm call early Tuesday morning at the Holiday Market on Highway 319 South. The front glass had been broken out with a brick, the report states.

• A man reported Monday that a rifle bullet entered through the northwest door of the Tifton-Tift County Recycling building on Magnolia Industrial Boulevard, struck a metal rafter and fell to the ground. He reported that no damage occurred to the building. The report states that the rifle bullet was collected for evidence.

• A man reported Monday that someone shot at his mobile home located in the 1100 block of Doc Melton Sr. Drive. He told police that the perpetrator was wearing an orange shirt and black pants with white stripes on the sides of the legs. The report states that no property was damaged. The man told police that he believed that a pump BB gun was used.
