LENOX —
Mr. Horace Eugene "Gene" Daughtrey, 81, of the Staunton Community in Cook County, passed away at his residence on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013.
Mr. Daughtrey was a retired farmer who was well respected in his community as a kind, gentle, quiet and humble man who enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with his friends and family. He was a very faithful and active church member at Lenox First Baptist where throughout his years there he had served as a deacon, Sunday school secretary and providing crafts for the VBS.
Mr. Daughtrey was born June 15, 1931, in Cook County to Tom Parker Daughtrey and Laura Kathryn Atkinson Daughtrey, both of whom preceded him in death. Less than a month ago, on Dec. 31, 2012, the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Thelma Carr Daughtrey, was laid to rest. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles and James Daughtrey, four brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Anita Daughtrey of Lenox; his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and James Thomas of Pinedale, Wyo.; grandchildren, "Lil" Tommy and Michelle Daughtrey, Jennifer and Bryan Taylor, Heather and Kenneth Meeler, Laura Daughtrey, Jessica Thomas, Terry Thomas and Karmen and B. J. Mervine; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Jackie Daughtrey of Tifton, Joyce Daughtrey of Lenox, Ruby Carr of Tifton, Reba Nell Carr of Tifton, Juanita (Joe) Graham of Warner Robins and Margaret Belflower of Macon.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Lenox First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Robinson and the Rev. Shane Ashley officiating. Interment will follow at Staunton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 p.m. today at the Lenox First Baptist Church.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, grandsons-in-law, and Mike Owens. Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Lenox First Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Music will be provided by Judy Wilson, Doris Arnold, Jennifer Daughtrey, and Janice Hilliard.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Lenox First Baptist Church Building Fund, 255 West Clements Ave., Lenox, GA 31637.
