Armstrong leaves Berrien for Clark Atlanta

TIFTON — For the third consecutive year, the Berrien Rebels will have a new head football coach. Rob Armstrong resigned this month to take a job with the Div. II Clark Atlanta University Panthers.

The change for Armstrong came suddenly. Kevin Weston was hired as the Panthers’ new head coach on Jan. 10 after serving for several years on the Tusculum staff. Weston, who had played for Armstrong at Graceville (Fla.) High, had always told his former coach that he would get him a job if he ever became head coach. At CAU, Armstrong will be an offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

The call came and after discussing matters with his wife, Amber, he decided to make the move. He, Weston and another assistant are currently sharing lodgings. “We’re living there until [Weston’s wife] Bonnie kicks us out,” he joked, which he anticipates will happen when Bonnie Weston moves to Atlanta after the school year ends.

He admits leaving Berrien was a tough decision. “We liked the people in town. That part will be tough.”

Armstrong’s Rebels went 3-7 in 2012 after consecutive seasons of 1-9.  He took the job after Tony Long vacated the position after the 2011 season. Long had replaced current Tiftarea Academy head coach Ryan Branch, who left after 2010 for an assistant job at Valdosta.
