Rebels travel with brooms, defeat Clinch, Lanier

TIFTON — The Turner County Rebels had a busy basketball weekend, journeying to Homerville and Lakeland. They made the most of it, sweeping the Clinch County Panthers and Lanier County Bulldogs in Region 2-A contests.

At Clinch on Friday, the Lady Rebels had a slim four-point lead after the first quarter, but exploded in the second to take a 33-15 lead at the half. Neither would see a big third period, but the Turner offense was active again in the fourth, outscoring the Lady Panthers 23-12 for the 64-33 victory.

Freshman Mylashia Yancey led Turner in scoring with 17 points. Anna Cole contributed 12 and Antania Graddic added 10 points and 18 rebounds.

The Rebels also emerged as winners, but had to come down to the wire to secure it. They jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first, but Clinch closed it to one, 33-32 at the half. Both teams would score 16 in the third to keep the margin at a single point, but the visitors’ bench proved to be a little deeper and their defensive pressure a little stronger as they were able to walk away with another region win, 63-57.

Nate Martin’s 17 paced the Rebels, who received plenty of assistance from Shaq Baldwin (12) and Antonio Graddic (15, 12 rebounds).

On Saturday in Lakeland, it initially looked like the Lady Bulldogs would make a game of it after the first eight minutes as the score was tied at 14. Lanier would score 12 in the second, but at that point, the Lady Rebels were rolling, putting up 29 of their own for the 43-26 halftime margin. They would keep it in high gear in the second half, scoring 24 in the third period and another 14 in the fourth. The Lady Dogs were unable to keep pace and were shellacked in the 81-44 finish.

Antania Graddic’s 23 led Turner, who also saw big nights from Zenia Coley (19) and Yancey (13).

The Rebels took the boys game, 87-60. Lanier actually had the lead at the half, 37-35, but found themselves on the back end of a 62-52 game eight minutes later and were outscored 25-8 in the fourth.

Devontae Curtis tore up the nets for Turner, scoring 26 points. Next closest for the Rebels was Quan Hillmon’s 13. Martin had 10.

The four wins boosted the season records for the Rebels and Lady Rebels to 17-4. Both are also 11-1 in Region 2-A. Tonight, they travel to Moultrie to face the Colquitt County Packers in non-region games.
