Four Irwin wrestlers claim first at wrestling tournament

TIFTON — The Region 1-A wrestling championship was held this past weekend in Turner County and the Irwin County Indians did well despite being able to use eight wrestlers in 14 slots.  They took third place as a team behind the Treutlen County Vikings and Turner County Rebels in the nine-team tournament.  

Seven of the Indians’ eight wrestlers wrestlers that participated will compete in the sectionals this weekend at Montgomery County.  The team placed five kids in the finals and four of those secured victories.

 In the 106 lb. division Denzel Scott cruised to his second consecutive region championship.  Evan Paulk won first the 145 lb. division, Micah Powers won at 195 lbs., pinning all of his opponents.  Sam Tucker at 285 lbs. won his third consecutive region championship.  

At 220 lbs., Taylor Hughes came in second place, Griffin Walker at 126 lbs. took third and Austin Padgett at 132 lbs. also won third place.
