TIFTON —
The women’s soccer team at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College travels to Albany on Friday for the second round of the state playoffs against Georgia Perimeter College at 4 p.m. at Darton State College.
After a 2-2 deadlock in regulation, Coach Jimmy Ballenger’s Fillies won the first game of the playoffs against Middle Georgia State College on penalty kicks Tuesday at the ABAC soccer field.
The Fillies are currently 12-7 overall. ABAC lost to Georgia Perimeter College by 3-0 and 7-2 scores during regular season game play.
“We really respect Georgia Perimeter and its coach,” Ballenger said. “We are going into the semifinals very aggressively so that we can make it into the final round of the playoffs. We know Georgia Perimeter’s style of play, and we anticipate a very good match. We have had excellent team chemistry, and we don’t want it to end. We want to go as far as we can.”
Nikita Morris scored two goals for the Fillies on Tuesday, bringing her total goals scored for the season to 34. That sets the ABAC record for most goals scored in a single season, surpassing Melissa Johnson’s record of 32 goals last year. Morris is also currently ranked second in the nation for goals scored in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
“Nikita has just been a pleasure to coach,” Ballenger said. “She has represented her country (England) very well and has fit in perfectly with the students and players at ABAC. She has such passion when playing and an excellent work ethic. She is the first person to tell you that soccer is a team sport.”
Another bright spot for the Fillies is freshman Rebecca Russell, also from England. She has recorded 14 assists, some of which helped Morris break ABAC’s record of most goals scored in a single season.
The winner of the ABAC-Georgia Perimeter match will meet the winner of the Darton-South Georgia match in Saturday’s final at 2 p.m. for the Region 17 title.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
