TIFTON —
Tift County Board of Education members were honored Tuesday night at their regular monthly meeting.
In celebration of School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia (March 18-22), Superintendent Patrick Atwater surprised the members by presenting each of them with a certificate for their continued dedication and service to the community and to the local schools as a school board member. The week-long observance calls attention to the contributions of local boards of education.
Tift County board members include Chairwoman Kim Rutland, Vice Chairman John Smith, Dr. Kim Ezekiel, Rita Griffin, Gannon Hall, Marian Richbourg and Melanie Roberson.
Atwater told the members, “Thank you for your service.”
He said the local board spends countless hours fulfilling its responsibilities and working together to continually improve Tift County’s education system. He said each member is paid $50 a month to serve on the board.
“They don’t do it for the money,” he said. “They do it for the children.”
As state constitutional officers, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.
The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) sponsors the celebration. The mission of GSBA is to ensure excellence in the governance of local school systems by providing leadership, advocacy and services, and by representing the collective resolve of Georgia’s 180 elected boards of education.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
