TIFTON —
Members of Moultrie Technical College’s Tifton Campus Phi Beta Lambda came together to assist the Tiftarea Food Bank by collecting non-perishable food items donated by faculty, staff and students in February.
The bank was established in 1984 and has been serving Tifton-Tift County for almost three decades. It is a 501(3) charitable nonprofit corporation that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger. While the food bank is located on the south side of Tifton, it serves the entire Tifton community. This has left the organization struggling to meet all the needs in the community recently.
The bank is seeking donations to help with the food supplies. The only funds that the organization receives are from dues that the committee and a very small group of local donors pay each month, which amounts to only about $200 per month.
With more users, fewer sponsors, and an eroding location, a representative from the bank says it is scrambling to survive. While food donations are helpful and much appreciated, financial donations can go even further since the Tiftarea Food Bank can purchase food wholesale.
Those interested in helping are invited to attend the next meeting March 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tiftarea Food Bank on South Ridge Avenue. All correspondence and donations can be sent to the Tiftarea Food Bank, P.O. Box 7312, Tifton, GA 31793. For more information, contact Nancy Holt at 386-5929.
Phi Beta Lambda is the post-secondary division of Future Business Leaders of America. Membership is open to all students interested in careers in business. For details about PBL, contact the MTC Tifton Chapter adviser Susan Davis at 229-391-2648.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
