TIFTON —
The ABAC Fillies fought back twice Friday in the first game of a softball doubleheader against the Georgia Perimeter Lady Jaguars at Newnan, but fell in eight innings, 2-1. The second game saw the Lady Jags jump out early en route to a 7-2 win.
In the first game, Georgia Perimeter scored a single run in the first inning and looked to make it stand for nearly six more innings, not only holding ABAC scoreless but also hitless. That would finally change in the seventh.
With one out, Lauren Thrasher got the Fillies into the hit column. One batter later, Karli Smith’s hit tied the game at one. Smith stood at third, but had to remain there as the Lady Jags got out of the jam. ABAC held them scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to push the contest to extra innings.
ABAC would again have a runner on third with a single out in the eighth, but were again kept at bay. Georgia Perimeter would return the favor in their half of the inning, but this time, Maddie Case scored with two outs on the scoreboard and left the Fillies with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss.
The game was dominated by pitching performances on both sides. Rachel Hill had a complete game for the Fillies, striking out two and giving up only a single earned run. Lyndsey Pardon for the Lady Jaguars kept ABAC missing all afternoon, striking out 15 and giving up only two hits.
Georgia Perimeter wasted no time in the second game. They leaped to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, adding another run in the third and two more in the fifth. The Fillies would get single runs in the fifth and seventh frames.
Maiah Talmage had nearly all of the offensive highlights for ABAC, getting three of their five total hits. Starting pitcher Morgan Bell struck out six batters.
ABAC’s next game again sees them on the road, playing South Georgia College on Tuesday in a doubleheader in Douglas. The Fillies will return home on Friday, March 29 when they play Gulf Coast Community College.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
