Erma Arnita Richardson Odom

TIFTON — Erma Arnita Richardson Odom, 90, of Tifton departed this life on the morning of Dec. 24, 2012 and stepped into our heavenly Father’s open arms. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Beulah Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located at 512 W. 23rd St. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Odom was the daughter of Mr. Cornelius Vanderbilt Richardson Sr. and Dora Allen Richardson. She was born May 27, 1922 in the Brookman Community near Brunswick in Glynn County. She began her education in the Glynn County School System, and upon graduating from high school, she continued at Albany State College and later began a teaching career in Coffee and Brantley counties.

In 1956, Mrs. Odom worked as a receptionist at Wilson High School under the administration of R.L. Mack. During the years from l966 to 1972, she served as the secretary at Industrial School and the administration of J.T. Reddick. She then attended Ben Hill Irwin Technical School and received her certification and pin as a certified nurse’s aide. She worked with The Visiting Nurse Association, where she was employed as a home health aide for 10 years before retiring.

In 1943, Mrs. Odom married George W. Odom, a young army solider whom she referred to as her “beloved darling.” George preceded her in death in 2011 after a shared 68 years of devotion to each other.

Mrs. Odom was always committed and devoted to her husband, their daughter, grandchildren, God and her church family. She and her husband banned together and joined Beulah Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the senior choir and they both served as a deacon and deaconess under the leadership of the Rev. Kenneth Glover. In 2002, Mrs. Odom was appointed to the Mother Board of Beulah Hill under the leadership of Pastor L.C. Solomon.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Clydie Olivia Richardson Gordon and Otha Leonia Richardson Pettigrew; and a brother, Cornelius Vanderbilt Richardson Jr.

She leaves to mourn her passing a loving and faithful daughter, Genita Faye Odom Barnes; a supportive former son-in-law, Troy Barnes Sr.; three grandsons, Troy Xavier Barnes Jr., Andrew Barnes and Justin Wade Barnes; a sister, Jennie R. Rhodes of White Oak; a sister-in-law, Vivian Inby of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, Other “Ben” Odom of Cleveland, Ohio and King E. Rhodes Sr. of White Oak; a devoted and faithful friend whom she referred to as “my sister,” Wylean Goins Wilson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and her church family.
