TIFTON — Dr. Wendy Vandemark, a Valdosta psychiatrist who works with the Sylvia Barr Center in Adel, will present a program on coping with Alzheimer’s at noon Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center.

Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, the City of Tifton and Tift Regional Medical Center, the program is part of Tifton’s monthly Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group and is open to the public at no charge.

Registration is required by calling Tift Regional at 353-6318 or the Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-272-3900. Lunch is provided by Cook Medical Center, and ResCare Home Care can provide adult sitter services if requested in advance along with registration.

The Sylvia Barr Center is a 12-bed geriatric-psychiatric unit that is part of Cook Medical Center, a 60-bed acute-care hospital located in Adel. Also operating under the auspices of CMC is Cook Senior Living Center, a 95-bed skilled nursing facility.

Dr. Vandemark graduated from the University of Akron magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in natural science. She received her medical degree from Northeastern Ohio University’s College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio. She completed her psychiatry residency at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich. She finished her residency training in 2004. After residency, she spent two years working in Detroit before relocating to Valdosta with her husband and two children.

She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has gained a wide variety of experience by working in many different settings. These include outpatient clinics, psychiatric hospitals, medical hospitals, chemical dependence rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and a center for developmental disabilities.

Dr. Vandemark has treated a diverse population, including those with mental illness, chemical dependence, dementia and developmental disabilities. She has experience with adolescents and adults, as well as the forensic and geriatric population.

The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group meets the second Thursday of each month. More information on Alzheimer’s disease may be obtained from the Tifton office of the South Georgia Region of the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.
