Local drive to ‘Sock It to ‘em With Love’

TIFTON — Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers is partnering with Amerigroup Real Solutions for the first time to present the “Winter Fest Sock It to ‘em With Love” project in support of her third annual sock drive. This fun event is open to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Copeland Park on Southern Avenue. There will be food, games, prizes, health information and fun for the whole family, says Chevers.

She noted that local DJ T-Roy will be at the event, as well as Diversified Enterprises and other vendors. Amerigroup will be giving out information concerning general health and wellness and PeachCare for Kids. Jocelyn Cooper, marketing and accountant manager with Amerigroup for the Southwest region (34 county service territory) said a kid zone station with educational activities will be set up. Also, local children will have a chance to participate in health trivia quizzes to win prizes.

Chevers says she’s still in need of some vendors to possibly donate any food, etc. Also, more socks are needed for the sock drive. She noted that Nixon Funeral Home has committed to donating approximately 250 socks, and Premier Drivers Academy (local DUI school) has committed to donating several boxes of socks. Also, employees at Diversified Enterprises have a challenge among themselves where they try to top each other on how many socks they bring in to donate.

Chevers said socks for older boys are usually donated; however, she noted that little children/youth socks are also needed. There is still time to make a donation, she stated. People can donate now until Tuesday. Donations of new children’s socks will be distributed through the Tifton Housing Authority and the Department of Family and Children Services before Valentine’s Day — Chevers noted that this is why she called the project “Sock It to ‘em With Love.”

“Everyone can benefit on both sides of the community,” she said. “The community doesn’t just stop in one place; it reaches out from corner to corner.”

Socks can be dropped off at the following sites: the Charles A. Kent Administration Building (Tift County Commissioner’s office), Solomon Nixon Funeral Home and Eagles Wings Judah Worship Center on Southern Avenue.

Chevers said the first year that the sock drive was held, over 1,000 socks were donated by former State Rep. Tony McBrayer. The second year went well also. Chevers said this year’s goal is 1,000 plus socks.

She stated that she’s hoping for a great turnout at Saturday’s event. She added that she’s hoping that the Hispanic community will attend as well, because Amerigroup will be providing valuable health information.
