Rain, bad weather continue to batter area

TIFTON — The heavy rains in the Tiftarea this week have resulted in four road closings in Tift County it was reported Wednesday.

The roads in question were Old Brookfield Road (Christian Way to WC Carpenter Road); Robert Oliver Road; Sutton Circle; and Richards Drive.

Besides the road closings, there were also reports of sewage spills.

Scott Murphy of ESG Operations, Inc., which oversees the Tifton-Tift County Waste Water Treatment Plant, informed the Gazette Wednesday afternoon of five sewage spills throughout the community.

Murphy said the one major spill was at the waste water treatment plant itself, which featured over 10,000 gallons.

The other four are considered minor, however.

They are at: 24th Street and Ridge Ave.; the lift station near the Georgia Museum of Agriculture; the Gum Creek Lift Station; and Golden Road at Hwy. 41.

Murphy emphasized the spills are not affecting businesses or residences.

Workers are cleaning the areas in question and will work to determine the cause, "but we are assuming it's the rain," said Murphy.

Other than the damage to the roads and sewage system, there have been no injuries reported.

According to a report by Vickie Hickman of the Tift County EMA, there were six people advised through the Red Cross Comfort Station that they could wait for the water to recede and return home, they could call family or friends to try to find a place to temporarily stay or they could wait for us to determine if a shelter would be opened. They chose to rent a motel room and pay for it themselves.

Hickman added the Tifton-Tift County Dive Team was out with boats. They contacted 40 households and offered assistance to evacuate the homes. Most chose to stay to see if the water would recede.

The reason for all of the havoc has been the heavy rain.

Rain gauges throughout Tift County have indicated anywhere between 6-to-10.18 inches of rain as of Wednesday morning throughout the county.

While most of the area saw little rain during the day Wednesday, the wet stuff returned at night.

As of 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, there was a report of 0.51 inches of rain at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station.

There were also reports of wind gusts of over 20 mph, as well.

Most weather forecasts have the rain finally clearing today, with highs expected to be in the high 50’s.

The next rain chance is set for Tuesday.
