TIFTON —
The Irwin County Indians bolted out to a 28-0 lead in their football season opener over the visiting Taylor County Vikings Friday night, and ended up winning by a 35-14 score.
Robert Moore opened up the scoring for Irwin with a 7-yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the first quarter. Eric Contreras added the point after.
Donte Studstill would add another score with 14-yard touchdown run with 2:09 left in the first. The kick was blocked.
Irwin would take a 21-0 halftime lead on a 18-yard run by Ryan Peterson. Clay Paulk would hit Jakyron Young with a pass for the two-point conversion.
James Curtis would make it 28-0 on a four-yard run with 8:32 left in the third quarter.
After a Taylor touchdown, Irwin would score again on a 53-yard touchdown run by Peterson. Contreras made the kick and the score was 35-7 with 6:53 left in the contest.
Taylor would add a late score on the Irwin reserves to make the score 35-14.
Peterson led Irwin’s rushing with 86 yards on five carries. Studstill added 57 yards on five carries.
Paulk was 2-for-3 passing for 53 yards. T.J. Wynn had one catch for 48 yards.
Irwin will travel up the road Friday to face Fitzgerald.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
