TIFTON —
The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the unemployment rate for Tift County rose from 9.8 percent in December 2012 to 9.9 percent in January. The rate was 11.3 percent in January 2012.
The preliminary unemployment rate in the Southern Georgia region, which includes Tift County, rose to 10.4 percent in January, up four-tenths of a percentage point from 10 percent in December. The rate was 10.8 percent in January 2012.
According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the rate rose because there were 389 more new claims for unemployment benefits in construction, trade, transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, health care and social assistance, and arts, entertainment and recreation. While the initial claims were up from December to January, they were down by 1,207, or 29.5 percent, from 4,094 in January 2012. The decline in claims led to an over-the-year drop in the area’s jobless rate.
The following list shows the unemployment rates for other counties in the Tiftarea and how they compare from December 2012 to January:
• Ben Hill - 13.0 percent in December to 13.7 percent in January (13.6 percent in January 2012)
• Berrien - 9.7 percent in December to 10.1 percent in January (10.9 percent in January 2012)
• Cook - 10.7 percent in December to 11.2 percent in January (12.1 percent in January 2012)
• Irwin - 12.5 percent in December to 12.0 percent in January (13.2 percent in January 2012)
• Turner - 9.7 percent in December to 10.2 percent in January (11.3 percent in January 2012)
Worth is not included in the Southern Georgia region, but is in the Southwest Georgia region. The unemployment rate for Worth dropped from 9.0 percent in December to 8.8 percent in January. The rate was 8.9 percent in January 2012.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 8.7 percent, unchanged from December. The rate was 9.3 percent in January a year ago.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
