The Tift County Gym Devils traveled north to Lassiter High School Marietta on Friday and in a sea of north Georgia schools, came away tied with Lassiter for the top score. In the four individual events, Tift took first in two of them and had three of the top 10 overall individual scores.
Tift and Lassiter, who had overall team scores of 109.175, edged Lambert, who finished with a total of 108.9.
Beth Roberts had both of the Gym Devils’ top finishes, earning first in the vault and floor exercise, with scores of 9.65 and 9.9, respectively. She also came in second on the bars, her 9.7 trailing only the 9.75 of Katie Stuart of Lambert, and 13th on the balance beam, with an 8.625.
Roberts’ dynamite day gave her the second highest overall score. Stuart was first, picking up first place finishes in the bars and beam, giving her a 38.425 to 37.875 advantage in total points. Libby Barbour would be just behind Roberts for third, with a total of 36.725 and Tatum Lamb finished eighth overall.
Tift had multiple top 10 scores in every event except the beam. Barbour’s 8.675 gave her 10th place. Roberts placed 13th, Lamb, 16th, and Kate Anderson was 32nd. The Gym Devils were overall third in the event, slightly more than one behind Lambert and Lassiter, who finished first and second.
As a team, Tift also finished third in the vault, behind Lassiter and Buford. Roberts won the event, with Barbour tying for eighth. Lamb tied for 26th and Jayde Cowart was 36th.
The Devils captured first on both the bars and floor exercise, tying Lassiter in the former and were more than a half-point better than Lambert in the latter.
Lassiter and Tift each had three top 20 scorers on the bars, Lassiter’s finishing third, 10th and 11th. Other than Roberts’ second place score, Barbour tied for seventh and Lamb tied for 14th. Bryanna McInvale also participated and was 31st for her team.
For the floor exercise, the Gym Devils were dominating. Roberts was nearly perfect and Barbour was not far behind, garnering a 9.7 score and coming in second. Lambert’s Stuart was next closest, scoring a 9.575. Closing out the Tift crown in the event were Lamb, who was ninth and McInvale who was 19th.
The Gym Devils will next be in action Wednesday, March 27 when they travel to Colquitt County.

Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
