TIFTON —
Local man Jerriel Taylor is presenting a free event Saturday at Mott-Litman Gym on Emerson O. Bynes Avenue for everyone in the community to attend. There will be free food, drinks and games. Gates open at noon, and the first game starts at 12:30 p.m.
“I’m asking all Tifton residents, all mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers to be there, not just to have fun. It’s all about the message,” Taylor said. “We as a society today have lost our way. We as young black males should start to hold ourselves accountable for our own actions. There’s no ceiling on your life unless you put it there. The first step to overcoming something is to face it. We are our brother’s keepers and before we go on, we need to make a change.”
He added, “I see better days for my brothers.”
Naming some prominent figures from the local community, such as professional football player Larry Dean, professional baseball player Nick Green, Vice Mayor Johnny Terrell and others, Taylor said, “These are all success stories. Listen, learn, pray and find peace within yourself. Keep your eyes on the prize.”
He said this Saturday’s event will include a five on five tournament game where people in the community can enter for free. Also, there will be a free kids three on three tournament for age groups nine and 10, 11 and 12, and 13 and 14. To register to be on a team, contact Taylor at 326-5090 by Saturday morning.
“Come help figure out a more productive future for our youth. If you have a problem, we can talk it out,” Taylor said. “Life is short. I pray for no more hurt, harm or violence to happen at all, much less here in Tifton. It’s gotten so bad that when someone says someone has been shot or killed, a store has been robbed or someone stole something, we don’t get surprised anymore. Something is wrong with that.”
He said, “Thanks to Walmart, Harley-Davidson, McDonald’s, Willis Meats and Tift County Recreational Department for all their efforts to help make this event a success. If you would like to bring a cake or a covered dish, please do so. Any help is greatly appreciated. This is a family reunion, and we are all family, no matter what color or creed. It would make my day to see 2,000 or more people at Mott-Litman.”

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
