Savannah considers next phase of cruise ship study

SAVANNAH — Savannah's city council is considering the next phase of a study exploring what it would take to bring a cruise ship terminal to the city's riverfront.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/T1M30Z) that the council discussed the issue at its meeting Thursday.

Council members are weighing a proposal to spend $279,500 for a two-phase study that would look at the environmental and navigation issues for a cruise line and evaluate three sites.

An earlier study examined the economic impact of a cruise line. It projected that even with a temporary cruise terminal, 288 jobs would be created county-wide.

Marty Johnston, the city's director of special projects, said the next phase would look at how cruise traffic would coordinate with port traffic, and what effect harbor deepening would have, among other issues.
