Moultrie investigators treat man's death as homicide

MOULTRIE — A man’s body was found early Saturday morning at a popular gathering spot near downtown Moultrie, and investigators are treating the case as a homicide.

Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said the man was pronounced dead around 6 a.m. in the parking lot of a park on First Street at Second Avenue Northwest. It was near a shelter where older people often come to play checkers.

Brock said investigators had determined the dead man’s identity but were not releasing his name at this time.

The Observer has learned, however, that the deceased is Stanley Alderman, whose age is about 51.

Both Brock and Investigator Freddie Williams of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the cause of death has not been determined.

“We are treating it as a homicide,” Williams said, “but we will not be 100 percent positive until an autopsy gets back.”

Brock said that autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

According to Observer archives, Alderman is the stepfather of Anthony Tyshaun Keith, whose body was found across from Woodmen of the World Park, Fifth Street Southeast, in April. Keith had been shot multiiple times, according to reports from that time.

No arrests have been made in Keith’s slaying.
