IRWIN COUNTY —
Oliver Broom, 93, of Irwin County died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Paulk Funeral Home in Ocilla. Interment will follow at Brushy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9 tonight at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Broom was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Irwin County to the late Robert Alonza Broom and Mary Ann Cox Broom. A retired, hardworking farmer who was known for growing pumpkins, Mr. Broom lived in the community most of his life. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Mr. Broom is survived by his daughter, Shirley B. Tankersley; two sons and daughters-in-law, J.M. and Dale Broome, Harvey and Nina Broome, all of Ocilla; two sisters and brother-in-law, Wilma Alford of Nashville, Lucille and Sonny Brooks of Albany; nine grandchildren, Gaya Simmons, Angie Williams, Morris Tankersley, Amanda McIntyre, Fred Broome, Nan Vassey, Tammie Sandford, Michael Tankersley and Della McClelland Farmer and 14 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Edna Morris Broom and son-in-law, Gary Tankersley. Paulk Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
