Woman killed in I-75 wreck

VALDOSTA — A Griffin woman died in an Interstate 75 wreck Monday afternoon while her mother and two children were treated for injuries, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The single-car accident happened just south of Exit 2 on the northbound side of Interstate 75, according to authorities at the scene.

Two adult females and two children, ages 15 and 10, had been traveling in the vehicle at approximately 3 p.m. when it overturned on the interstate in the Labor Day traffic, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Three of the occupants were conscious as they were rushed to the hospital, said GSP Trooper First Class Shane Copeland.

Mindy Manley, 33, of Griffin died in the wreck, the trooper said. She was the vehicle’s driver.

“We don’t have any definite witnesses, but a couple people did see the car rolling over,” said Copeland. “What I can tell from the tire tracks is that the vehicle came off of the road onto the emergency strips on the left shoulder. It then over-corrected to the right and started rotating, before it (went) off onto the right shoulder.”

Some witnesses phoned in the accident’s chilling details to emergency personnel, with some reporting that a child was ejected from the vehicle and into the roadway.  Authorities said some passengers were partially ejected from the vehicle but nothing like the initial report of a child being thrown into interstate traffic.

Passersby from Georgia and Florida flocked to the overturned car to offer assistance, said Copeland.

“There were several people who were certified in CPR who stopped and rendered aid,” said Copeland. “There were good people from Georgia and Florida who stopped to help.”
