TIFTON —
The Tift County Blue Devils will be visiting an old friend Friday night as Coach John Reid’s football team will make the trek up Interstate 75 to face the Houston County Bears in Warner Robins.
Before dropping down in classification in 2009, the Bears would face Tift as a member of the same region. Friday’s contest will be the first time the teams have met since Tift’s 33-14 win in 2009.
Houston will come into Friday’s game with a 1-0 record after a 35-23 win over Harris County this past Friday. Tift will enter at 0-1 after a 33-29 loss to Westover in Albany Saturday.
Two of Westover’s touchdowns in the contest came as a result of blocked punts. That included the game-winning score with a little over four minutes left in the contest.
“It was player error (on both),” said Reid. “We simply didn’t get the job done.”
The loss has not deterred the enthusiasm of his squad, the coach said.
“We have had a tremendous week of practice,” said Reid. “Everything is going great.”
One bright spot in the Westover game was the play of senior Rashad Daniels.
From his running back position, Daniels rushed for 235 yards on 34 carries, Reid said.
“He had a great game,” the coach added.
Defensively, “I didn’t think we played as well as we should have,” Reid said.
That Tift defense will be tested again as it will face a Houston County offense that put up 491 yards of offense against Harris County
Houston quarterback Taylor Boyett was 14-for-20 passing for 261 yards in the contest. He had touchdown passes of 85 yards to Brensten Lindsey, and of 95 yards to Myles White.
Samsun West added a touchdown run of 44 yards, as he had 161 yards rushing on 26 carries.
“They have a good offense and a good quarterback,” said Reid.
Reid indicated that Houston also had good athletes on defense, but with Harris playing what Reid described as “a pretty good spread offense,” it was hard to gauge them against the West Coast offense the Blue Devils will run.
Houston did give up 461 total yards against Harris, 327 through the air, and 134 on the ground.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Warner Robins.

May 21 Column – George F. Will
Leaving aside the seriousness of lawlessness, and the corruption of our civic culture by the professionally pious, this past week has been amusing. There was the spectacle of advocates of an ever-larger regulatory government expressing shock about such government's large capacity for misbehavior. And, entertainingly, the answer to the question "Will Barack Obama's scandals derail his second-term agenda?" was a question: What agenda?
