Turner boys fall just short in tournament

TIFTON — The Turner County Rebels came up just short against the Coffee Trojans in the finals of the Ronalda Pierce Holiday Tournament Saturday while the Lady Rebels were edged by the Lowndes Vikettes for third place.

The Rebels had the lead after the first quarter of the championship game, 15-13, but Coffee rallied for a five-point halftime lead, which they turned into a 12-point advantage after three quarters. Turner managed to match Coffee’s point total in the fourth, but the deficit remained and the Trojans took home the victory and championship, 63-51.

Three Turner players scored in double digits. Nate Martin and Quan Hillmon each had 11 while Antonio Graddic added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Rebels are now 8-2 on the season.

In the consolation game, the Lady Rebels were similarly close to the Vikettes in the opening frames. Lowndes was up by a point after the first quarter, but saw the tables turned in the second. Turner outscored them, 7-5, to have an 18-17 lead at halftime. Lowndes came out strong in the third and regained the advantage, 30-24, heading into the final eight minutes.

The fourth quarter saw both teams score 19, Lowndes taking a 49-43 win. Zenia Coley’s 17 led the Lady Rebels while Antania Graddic had 15 points with 14 rebounds. They are now 7-3. Both Turner squads face off against the Albany Indians at home on Friday.

The opening night of the tournament saw the Rebels and Lady Rebels take easy victories over their opposition.

The Lady Rebels led 22-2 after one and had a 36-9 halftime lead over the Stewart County Lady Royal Knights en route to a dominating 69-15 victory. Coley had 18 points, Graddic, 12, and Mylashia Yancey added 16.

Against the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes, the Rebels played a close first half. They were up 22-18 at the break, but got their offense into gear in the third quarter, outscoring the Canes 17-3. From there, Turner was able to coast to a 65-28 finish. Graddic had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

On Friday, the Turner girls met the Americus-Sumter Lady Panthers, who had advanced to the second round after taking a forfeit victory over Tri-Cities. They were up by four after a quarter, but the Lady Panthers rallied for a 26-23 lead heading into the lockerroom.

The Lady Rebels were held to only six points in the third quarter, while giving up 14. They would outscore Americus-Sumter, 23-18, in the final period, but it was too late and they fell, 58-52. Coley’s 24 paced Turner. She was joined in double figures by Graddic’s 18.

The Friday night game for the Rebels saw them engage the Lowndes Vikings in a high-scoring battle. Turner was down 21-12 after the first eight minutes, but managed to tie it at 41 at halftime.

The scoring onslaught continued in the third with the Rebels holding the advantage, 67-61. They would hold off the Vikings in the fourth to preserve the six-point win, 87-81.

Devontae Curtis was one of four Rebels to score in double digits, leading the squad with 14. Graddic had 11, Shaq Baldwin scored 11 and Hillmon finished with 10.
