Inspirtational leaders honored Saturday

TIFTON — Five inspirational leaders in the community were recognized Saturday night in the first ever Spirit of Greatness Awards Gala at the Leroy Rogers Senior Center. The 2013 awardees are, pictured from left, Tifton Mayor Jamie Cater, former Meals on Wheels Director Marion Culpepper Whiddon, Moultrie Technical College's Public Relations and Marketing Director Jana Wiggins, former City Councilman Roosevelt Russell and eighth grade teacher and local associate minister Isaac Ross. Cater received the Man of the Year Award; Whiddon received the Hazel Humber Bailey Award; Ross and Wiggins received Luminary Awards; and Russell received the King Lifetime Achievement Award.

The southern half of the 1962 Class AA girls state hoops tournament was played in Fitzgerald, despite Fitzgerald having dropped their girls program in 1957.
