Doris Voncile Killam Evers, 92, of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Cook Senior Center in Adel. She had been a resident of Mary’s Haven Assisted Living in Adel for the last two years. Funeral services for Mrs. Evers will be held at Northside Baptist Church in Tifton at 3 p.m. Saturday with Dr. Frank Cox and members of the Northside Baptist Church Staff officiating. The Evers family will receive friends at the church from 12:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the service.
Six of the Northside Baptist Church active deacons will serve as pallbearers with the remaining deacons serving as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Evers was born on May 10, 1920, in Flomaton, Ala., the daughter of the late Fred and Maggie Killam. She is also preceded in death by her husband, H. L. Evers and her son, Lanier Evers.
Doris grew up on a farm situated on the state line of Florida and Alabama where she and her brothers and sisters were much involved in the everyday activities of farm life. After graduation from high school, she worked as a secretary for Travelers Insurance. She married H. L. Evers in 1944. Following World War II and his discharge from the U.S. Navy, they moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where she was a homemaker and a mother to their three sons.
Doris was an active longtime member of the Lake Forest Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Fla., where she served in many capacities. When Lake Forest Church closed its doors, she became a member of the North Jacksonville Baptist Church where she was active in their Senior Adult Ministry. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, and gardening.
Mrs. Evers is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. Fred M. Evers and Cindy Evers of Tifton and Larry Evers and Ann Evers of Silver Spring, Md.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
