One down, two to go. That’s what is left of the Tift County Blue Devils’ regular season. If they start as well as they did Tuesday night, it will be a happy week for local fans. In a home game against the Crisp County Cougars, they walked away with a sweep, the Lady Devils winning , 47-37 and the boys taking the nightcap, 75-55. Both squads are now 19-4.
Coach Julie Conner had solid performances from all of her players. Alexis Johnson had seven points and eight rebounds, Dee Dee DeShazer netted 18. Staceyanna Murrell scored 12 with eight rebounds, and both DeJai Jordan and Brakia Bateman had four.
Johnson and DeShazer have been the biggest scorers this season for Tift. Each averages 15 points per game. Conner quickly points out, though, that the entire team is making major contributions.
“I think they’re all playing great basketball,” she said.
They will close out the regular season this weekend. The Colquitt County Packers are in town Friday night at 7 p.m. Saturday, they go to Valdosta to face the Wildcats. The Lady Cats are the only team to have beaten the Lady Devils in Region 1-AAAAAA competition. Last Saturday, they broke their 15-game, month-long winning streak, 48-46, in a game played in Tifton.
Conner said her squad will not be overlooking Colquitt, but are eager to face Valdosta again, even though she does not feel that the loss hurt them.
“I think we’re peaking at the right time,” she said. “The Valdosta loss was a blessing.”
On Friday against Colquitt, any young athlete that participated in recreation department, Upward Bound or any other league will be admitted free as long as they are wearing their team shirt. Tift County High will be Pink Night as well at the gym and fans are encouraged to wear the color. Pink t-shirts will also be on sale.
Also on Friday, the 1993 Lady Devils region championship team will be honored, with former players and coaches in attendance.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
