TIFTON —
Region 2-A belongs to the Turner County Rebels. The Lady Rebels had an easy time of their clincher, destroying the Wilcox County Lady Patriots in Rochelle by the improbable 81-3. The Rebels had to overcome a deficit against Wilcox before they brought home their 74-62 victory.
The game was a makeup date from earlier this year and will be the last game before the state playoffs. Region 2-A did not schedule a reason tournament this season. Playoff pairings will be announced Wednesday after the final power rankings are calculated.
The Lady Rebels took the early lead on Wilcox and never looked back. It was 25-0 after the first. At the half, the home side of the scoreboard still read zero and Turner was up to a 48-0 lead. After three, they were up 64 and the Lady Pats still had not managed a crooked number.
Turner finally lost the shutout in the fourth quarter when a three-pointer by Wilcox finally got them on the board. When the final whistle sounded, the Lady Rebels had an 81-3 win.
Three players finished in double digits for the visitors. Zenia Coley led all scorers with 14. Mylashia Yancey swished the nets for 13 and Keyanna Dawson added 12, plus 10 rebounds.
It would not be as easy for the Rebels. Wilcox was up 17-14 after the first eight minutes. The lead was trimmed to a single point, but it was still the home team with the lead.
The margin would stay the same after the third quarter, Wilcox holding on to a 49-48 lead.
Turner would strike back in the final period. Wilcox was only able to muster 13 points while the Rebels broke loose for 26 and were even up 63-40 at one time before their hosts could react. The final result was a 74-62 win and revenge for the Patriots’ earlier season defeat of Turner in Ashburn. This was the Rebels’ only region loss during the season.
Devontae Curtis starred for Turner with 28 points. Antonio Graddic scored 15, adding 12 rebounds. Shaquille Baldwin finished with 10.
