Sellers Veazey of Tifton recently won a Grand Championship in the Owner Amateur Youth 11 & Under Mares/Geldings Grand Championship class at the 74th annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Sellers was riding his horse, The American General.
“Sellers Veazey should be commended for a fine performance at the Celebration. Sellers’s exceptional skill coupled with The American General’s athleticism made this a memorable win,” said Doyle Meadows, CEO of the Celebration.
While riding The American General, Veazey also won a 1st Place Blue Ribbon in the Owner-Amateur Youth Riders 6-11 Years on walking Geldings class.
The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is the world’s largest and most prestigious event celebrating the Tennessee Walking Horse. Founded in 1939, The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration® is based on a vision of Henry Davis of Wartrace, Tenn. The event is an 11-day and night annual festival in Shelbyville, Tenn., during which there are 2,660 entries and 1,500 horses compete in 171 classes and more than $650,000 in prizes are awarded. The Celebration names 39 World Champions of the breed and the festival culminates in its main attraction, the crowning of the World Grand Champion, on the last day of the event. Additional activities include a barn decorating contest, trade fair and dog show.

Steve Hyman, an officer with the Tifton Police Department, is all smiles after receiving the Tifton Sertoma Club's 2013 Service to Mankind Award, presented by Chad Alexander, past president of the club.

Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
