Legend to be honored

TCFEE to honor Coach Fred Tucker Friday at game

TIFTON — Join the Celebration. Congratulations to all the Fred Tucker fans for making it happen. In just under six months, the $25,000 goal has been reached to endow the Fred Tucker Physical Fitness Chair.

Throughout his ongoing 64 years of teaching and coaching, Fred Tucker has inspired countless students and athletes, while generating a volume of colorful stories of his innovative and relentless drive to get the best from both players and pupils. At 89 years of age and still teaching a full load of five classes at Omega School and then coaching football and track in the afternoon, Fred is the longest serving teacher and coach in Georgia.

About 12 minutes before the 8 p.m. kickoff of the Blue Devils’ first home game tomorrow, TCHS Principal Dr. Ryan Gravitt will emcee a midfield ceremony to honor Coach Tucker through the endowment of the legendary coach’s own "Chair."  Fred’s wife Peggy; Hoyt Vance (fundraising campaign chairman, former Foundation board member, and TCHS class of ’58), Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence President Marianna Keesee and I will be on the field with Fred.

Fred and Peggy will occupy "chairs" of honor under a special tent in the tailgate area at the northwest corner of the stadium. Starting at 7:00, please come by pre, during or post-game to visit with the couple. Chairs, tables and refreshments will be provided for the well-wishers.

In just under six months, Fred fans rallied to contribute the $25,000 needed for the endowment. Coach Tucker’s Chair will make the 10th  chair producing annual grants each spring to teachers. The current total is $27,040, with more contributions coming in every day.

Since the original gift by Lyn Lindskog Deroy to honor her mother by endowing the Virginia Short Lindskog Foreign language and Global Awareness Chair, the Foundation has enjoyed the good fortune to endow an additional "Chair" about every other year. The endowment funds are permanent and generate annual grants on a competitive basis limited to 90 percent of the interest earned the previous year.
