TIFTON —
At a short meeting this week, the Tift County Commission agreed to garbage rate hikes for county residents.
County residents will see an increase from $12.52 per month to $14.50, while commercial dumpsters will go from $2.25 per yard to $3.30.
Commissioner Robert Setters, who was at the meeting that decided the price change in his role as County Commissioner Vice Chairman, told the other commissioners, “We are under market price from what other counties charge. Our dump fund has been depleted. We can fully fund it through these changes.”
It was explained the county dump is fully funded through the garbage fees, and no tax money goes to its operation.
The move was approved 5-1 with Commissioner Sherry Miley voting against the action.
Another item brought up at the meeting concerned medical care for inmates at the Tift County Jail.
There was an item on the agenda concerning possible new contracts but County Manager Jim Carter brought out that money for inmate medical care has already been budgeted, and the county in years past has allowed the sheriff to make the arrangements for the care. The commission agreed with Carter’s assessment and dropped the item for the agenda.
When the time came for items he wanted to bring up at the meeting, Carter took the time to applaud the organizers of last weekend’s Emergency Preparedness Fair.
“We had GEMA and National Weather Service folks there, and they all said ours was the best one in the state,” Carter said proudly.
Road and Public Works Director Jason Jordan told the commissioners a log will be kept of every resident who calls in asking questions and wanting services from the county. That way a record can be kept of what was done to assist the resident with their concern.
Earlier in the meeting, Jordan also asked the commission to approve an extension of a road striping contract with Mid-State Striping for 20.55 more miles of county roads.
“We cannot buy the paint and do it ourselves this cheap,” said Jordan.
That matter was approved unanimously.
The commission also approved by 6-0 votes, the sale of surplus road vehicles, as well as a beer license for Doc’s Food Mart on Ga. Hwy. 125 South.
A move to appoint someone to the Region Four Behavioral Health & Development Disabilities Board was tabled until next month.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
