MOULTRIE —
Colquitt County’s school board fired the high school band director Monday night, 11 days after he was charged with having sex with a student.
Paul Guilbeau did not testify or call witnesses in his own defense at the termination hearing.
Witnesses against him included the 17-year-old girl he allegedly had sex with; her mother; Fritzie Sheumaker, assistant superintendent for human resources and student services; Moultrie Police Department Investigator Steve Colgan; and Schools Superintendent Samuel DePaul.
Colgan told the board that the Moultrie police have copies of sexually explicit text messages — allegedly from Guilbeau — that were found on the girl’s phone. He said there was also a photo of the girl in panties that had apparently been sent to Guilbeau’s phone, and a response from that phone that indicated it was received.
The police department alleges that about 4 p.m. Aug. 10 the girl went to the EconoLodge where Guilbeau has been living since coming to Moultrie a year ago. They allegedly had a sexual encounter, after which she went to work and returned around 11 p.m. and they had a second sexual encounter, according to testimony at the hearing.
Sheumaker was called as a witness to confirm that Guilbeau had been given paperwork outlining that sexual activities with students is punishable by firing. She said he received those documents Aug. 16, 2011 — one year to the day before his arrest.
The vote to fire Guilbeau was unanimous among the five board members present. Board member Roy Reeves was absent.
Guilbeau has been suspended with pay since his arrest.
