TIFTON —
Tonight, the Berrien Rebels take on the Thomasville Bulldogs in a 7:30 p.m. Region 1-AA contest at Veterans Stadium in Thomasville. Berrien will be coming in trying to even out their 2-3 record. Thomasville is hoping for its second victory of the year.
Berrien has had rotten luck with Thomasville. In the teams’ history against each other, the Rebels are still trying to pick up their first win. The closest they have come was a 7-7 tie in the Bulldogs’ oddball 1967 season, when they finished 3-1-6. Last year Thomasville won, 35-7.
This season, Thomasville has been the one with rotten luck. Their 1-5 start is their worst since 1994 and only their third ever. But the record is not fooling Berrien coach Rob Armstrong.
“They’ve played some tough competition, regardless of their record,” he said.
The Bulldogs’ schedule has been a rough one. Their losses have been against Thomas County Central, Cairo, Westminster of Atlanta, Cook and most recently to Brooks County. All are traditional powers and with the exception of Central, all games have been close. Against Brooks, the Trojans were able to score two touchdowns in a 17-second span that blew open what had been a tight 7-3 Brooks lead.
Berrien, on the other hand, is off to their best start in three years. After posting back-to-back 1-9 seasons, the Rebels have two wins this year. They blew out Brantley County, 34-6 and repeated the performance in their next game, a 41-6 pounding of Lanier County.
Armstrong said his plan was to focus on ball control against the Bulldogs.
“We’d like to be able to control the ball and keep their offense off the field.”
He said that was the problem against the Early County Bobcats, a game that went from a narrow deficit to a 43-19 Early victory.
“We have to play four quarters,” said Armstrong. “We gave up too many big plays.”
Berrien will have another strong opponent next week. The state-ranked Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes will be visiting Nashville for another region contest.

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
