TIFTON —
After last week’s huge game with the Cook Hornets, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes have another clash of the titans this week when they travel to Quitman to play the Brooks County Trojans.
“It doesn’t get any easier,” said Fitzgerald head coach Jason Strickland.
“It’ll be a battle hopefully between two of the best teams in the state.”
Brooks County is the state’s No. 2 ranked team in Class AA. The Trojans are 2-0 in region competition, 6-0 overall and have not limited their excellence to opponents their own size. Earlier in the season, they defeated Class AAAA Monroe High, 21-18. The next week, they shocked Class AAAAAA Valdosta, 28-24, at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
Fitzgerald has also played Monroe this year, a game they lost in overtime. Other than that, the Canes’ record is unblemished. Their five victories have been over Jefferson County, Irwin County, Pelham, a 37-0 shutout of Charlton County and last week’s 21-15 victory over Cook.
The Cook game saw Fitzgerald take an early lead and hold on against the Hornets’ comeback attempt.
“I’m very pleased with our effort,” said Strickland.
The coach credited his team’s quick start to advance planning. He said his squad had worked on a new formation they knew the Hornets had not seen. When it was unleashed at the start of the game, quarterback Romarius Gaulden made a good read and was able to scamper down the field for the score.
Strickland said that other than a few bumps and bruises, his team will be healthy for Brooks.
“Everyone should be on go for Friday.”

Proud of diamond accomplishments of Devils, Panthers
Tift County almost pulled off an incredible feat this year, having two teams in the baseball quarterfinals.. It was a great year for baseball at all area schools, all eight of them in the postseason. Both Kyle Kirk's Tift County Blue Devils and Brad Porter's Tiftarea Academy Panthers came within an eyelash of doing even better: the final four.
