TIFTON —
The Tiftarea Lady Panthers’ run in the state tournament ended in the Elite Eight Thursday afternoon as they dropped two of three games to the two-time defending state champion Stratford Academy Lady Eagles.
Stratford won the first game 1-0. A third inning double by freshman Erin Register was the only hit of the game for the Lady Panthers against Stratford pitcher Lexi Rouse.
Senior Brooke Keen went all seven innings giving up one unearned run in the fourth inning that turned out to be the game winner.
Keen allowed six hits and walked none while striking out four in game one.
In the second game, the Lady Panthers jumped on Stratford with three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Laykin Souter led off the inning with a single. After Madi Smith worked her way aboard with an eight-pitch walk, Jarrett McWhorter doubled home both runs.
McWhorter moved to third on a groundout by Rachel Davis and scored when an attempt to throw Katy Johnson out trying to steal second base went into center field.
After Stratford picked up a run in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Lady Panthers answered with a run of their own in the top of the 7th.
Register led off the inning with a single. A double by Souter moved her to third and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith. Keen again went all seven, allowing eight hits and one earned run while striking out one, and Tiftarea took game two 4-1.
The Lady Panthers had trouble stringing together hits in game three and lost 9-1.
Their only run came in the first inning when Smith walked, moved to third on a McWhorter single, and was driven in by Caitlyn Albritton.
Keen again went the distance giving up 5 earned runs on 11 hits and striking out one. Souter led the offense on the day with 4 hits, while Smith and McWhorter each added three.
Coach Mike Patrick said, "I am very proud of the heart our girls showed all season long. Our three seniors did a great job leading us all season and I appreciate everything they've done."
Tiftarea finished the season 24-9 and reclaimed the 3-AAA region championship.

Tattnall Square tops Tiftarea, 6-2
Ernie Banks used to say, "let's play two." In a game that was as long as two and was defined early on by errors and later by a pitching duel, it would be offense that propelled the Tattnall Square Trojans past the Tiftarea Academy Panthers, 6-2 in 14 innings. Tattnall, who won the first game of the series, 4-1 before dropping game two, 6-3, will meet Mount de Sales in the Class AAA semifinals next week.
