TIFTON —
The Tiftarea Academy Panthers finally start their 2012 Region 1-AAA schedule tonight when they travel to play the Pinewood Christian Patriots at Bellville.
Last Friday, Tiftarea gave first year head coach Ryan Branch his first victory of the season when they defeated the Crisp Academy Wildcats, 28-12.
Pinewood and Tiftarea have split their overall series, 3-3, which includes the 2005 state semifinals when the Patriots avenged a regular season loss to the Panthers, 31-28, and advanced to the state finals where they finished runner-up to Flint River Academy. Tiftarea won last year’s meeting, 41-14.
This season, Pinewood Christian has put together a 3-2 record and a string of closely-contested games. They defeated Robert Toombs Academy by a touchdown, lost to Stratford Academy by eight points, were edged by Brentwood School, 20-19, and slipped by Bethesda Day last week, 39-36. The only game decided by double digits was their win over Frederica Academy, 31-14.
Tiftarea goes into the game with a bit of its own momentum. After several close losses, the Panthers finally picked up their first win last week over Crisp Academy at homecoming.
That game looked to be another close one, but Tiftarea closed the door with 2:47 to play when Matthew Brown scored from five yards out and then added the extra point.
Against Crisp a pair of Panthers put up big numbers. Rob Flick threw for 175 yards. His main target was Ethan Mims, who had 80 yards receiving. Mims was a dual offensive threat, also rushing for 170 yards to put his total yardage at 257.
There will be another long road game next week, but it won’t be the Panthers doing the traveling. They will host the Bulloch Academy Gators in another Region 1-AAA game at the Panther Pit.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
