Tift County’s Larry Dean on Pro Bowl ballot

TIFTON — Former Tift County Blue Devil Larry Dean has a chance to be honored for his outstanding play by going to the Pro Bowl and fans can ensure he gets this honor.

Dean is one of eight players listed in the special teams category on the online ballot. Only the player receiving the most votes will be selected.

After graduating from Valdosta State two years ago, he became only undrafted free agent to make the team. Since then, he has been a key part of the Vikings’ special teams.

In 2011, he finished fourth on the team in special teams last year after playing in all 16 games.

This year, he is doing even better. He recorded a tackle last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, pushing his 2012 total to seven. That is tops for the Vikings.

He is also used as a blocker on both kickoff and punt returns, frequently helping to spring teammates for more yardage.

His blocking ability also allowed him to enter Minnesota’s record book for taking part in a rare feat this season.

On Sept. 30, the Vikings defeated the Detroit Lions, 20-13, a game that included a 105-yard kickoff return touchdown by Percy Harvin and another score by Marcus Sherels on a 77-yard punt return. Dean was on the field for both, only the third time in team history this has been accomplished.

Dean was also no stranger to success in his collegiate days. At VSU, he broke Jessie Tuggle’s all-time tackles record.

To vote for Dean, fans can go to the official Minnesota Vikings Web site, www.vikings.com.
