Devils meet undefeated Vikings

TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devils have not had a shortage of outstanding opponents and this week is no exception.

The undefeated Lowndes Vikings will invade Brodie Field tonight at 8 p.m. against a Devils squad attempting to snap a five-game losing streak.

When describing Lowndes, Tift head coach John Reid wasted few words.

“They’re good.”

The Vikings have gone 8-0 in 2012 and are currently sporting a No. 4 ranking in the latest Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.

Reid added Lowndes has a good chance of winning the state championship. Their record so far this year leaves little doubt of their skill.

Not only are they undefeated, they have blown out nearly every opponent they have faced.

The close games have come at the hands of fellow Region 1-AAAAAA schools, with identical 17-14 wins over Colquitt County and Valdosta and last week a 31-29 win over the Coffee Trojans.

The Coffee contest saw the Vikings give up 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its two-point finish. The margin of victory matters little to Reid.

“It’s still a win.”

Most of Lowndes’ punch against the Trojans was provided by one player - Tiquan Lang.

Lang scored all four touchdowns for his team, three rushing and another on a kickoff return. He would finish with 61 yards, trailing Nick Burgman’s 83 for tops on the team.

It is another week of tough opponents for the Blue Devils, playing in a region loaded with quality opposition. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ranks three fellow region schools - Camden at No. 1, Lowndes at No. 4 and Colquitt County tenth.

Reid said he was not surprised at how loaded Region 1-AAAAAA was.

“We knew that coming in,” he said.

The Devils will playing their eighth consecutive game without a break. One will finally come next week, giving the team a chance to rest before their season finale at Brunswick.

Like Tift, Lowndes has not had a break this season. While the Devils will get a chance to rest up next week, the Vikings will have to wait even longer.

Lowndes’ off week in two weeks and after they play the Camden County Wildcats, a game likely to decide the region championship. Camden is also undefeated so far this year.

The Valdosta game saw the Blue Devils shake up their lineup. Michael Hancock started the game at quarterback, being relieved by Kris Miller in the second quarter. Ryan Wedgeworth, who has spent most of the season under center has seen most of his time as a member of the defensive secondary.

Reid said the experiments were likely to continue this week.

“We’re trying to put the best players on the field,” he said.
