TIFTON —
Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers is asking all clergy persons and their congregations to come out at 3 p.m. Sunday to the new Dollar General store on the corner of Highway 41 South and Southern Avenue to pray for the business.
In a letter that Chevers sent out to local churches, she stated, “I write this letter to invite you and your congregation to a prayer covering over a new business in our community. As you may or may not know, in the very near future, Tift County will have a new Dollar General store to open on the corner of Highway 41 South and Southern Avenue. This is just one stepping stone to more businesses coming into our community. As a community, we are proud to see growth in south Tifton and we look forward to more business ventures.”
Chevers noted in the letter that some members of the community, however, have expressed concerns about the new Dollar General store, in reference to robbery or someone getting hurt or killed.
She emphasized, “With everything that Satan is trying to throw at our community, we see the need for prayer.”
She further states in the letter, “I would like to see a clergy person on each corner of the store, one at the front door and the rest lined at the drive entrance to the store.”
Chevers says she asked certain clergy persons to boldly step forward and lead in prayer, asking God to cover the new store and all the workers.
“My prayer is to see a united and safe community, and with your prayers and help, yes we can,” Chevers said in the letter.
She told The Gazette, “We have some businesses in our area like Martae’s, Wing Masters and Bryant Soul Food that are helping our community grow. We would like to see more businesses like a nice restaurant and a grocery store in our area as well.”
For any questions or concerns, contact Chevers at 326-0241.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
