TIFTON —
Local group The Carpenters will headline this week's Concert in the Park at noon Friday.
Clinton Carpenter and his two brothers, Cal and Fred Carpenter, have been performing together since 1987. Clinton says he started in the 1960s alongside his father, Paul.
Clinton, who is the eldest brother, plays guitar; Fred plays bass; and Cal, who is the youngest, plays mandolin, guitar and the fiddle.
The Carpenters were originally a bluegrass group, but they play a variety of music, including bluegrass, old-time gospel, old-time rock and country western.
The Carpenters started with Cal's being interested in forming a group with his brothers, Clinton said.
“He wanted to play mandolin and that’s how we started playing bluegrass,” said Clinton.
He noted that Cal played piano when he was younger and when he went to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College to attend school, he began taking an interest in string instruments.
The three brothers grew up with music being a strong part of their family. Clinton said their father played with some friends before Clinton was born and he remembers playing with them when he was old enough.
“We’ve known since we were kids how to play,” Clinton said.
The free concerts are sponsored by The Tifton Gazette and Main Street Tifton. This year, the concerts are being held in a new location, at Veterans Park across the street from the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce. They will continue through October. People are encouraged to bring their lunches and a lawn chair or blanket to the concert.
