Night of Jazz at First Tuesday on October 2 at ABAC

TIFTON — Jazz tunes from the David Brothers Band will fill the air on Oct. 2 as the First Tuesday Performance Series kicks off its 11th season at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. A Night of Jazz Music will be held in the Chapel of All Faiths on the ABAC campus at 7 p.m. All First Tuesday performances are open to the public at no cost.

The series features regional professional artists on the first Tuesdays of five months during the year. Dr. Susan Roe, Director of Music for the School of Liberal Arts, is the First Tuesday Program Director.

For two decades, the award-winning David Brothers Band has been performing and recording jazz music in a wide variety of settings. The band is led by real brothers, Andy David (piano) and John David (drums). Sidemen include many of Atlanta's top musicians including Kenyon Carter (saxophone) and Tim Aucoin (bass) who will be on hand for the ABAC performance.

Straight-ahead jazz remains the mainstay of the group's repertoire, but in recent years the rhythm section has explored the music of Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, and popular music of the recent past, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, “All My Life” by Foo Fighters, and “Blackbird” by The Beatles. The band appears frequently in the Atlanta metropolitan area and throughout the southeastern United States.

Andy David serves as Head of the Department of Performing Arts at the University of North Georgia. He also conducts the award-winning North Georgia Jazz Ensemble and serves as music director and conductor of the North Georgia Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the United States Army Band, he has performed in 26 foreign countries and throughout the United States.

John David has performed throughout the United States and Europe in a variety of jazz and commercial settings. Currently residing in Atlanta, he is one of the most sought-after drummers in the nation. He has twice received international awards from Downbeat Magazine. Some notable artists he has performed with include Arturo Sandoval, Bruce Hornsby, and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band. In addition to his active performing schedule, he currently teaches percussion and jazz at Berry College and the University of North Georgia.

Aucoin is a music educator and bassist. Originally from New Orleans, he has performed internationally with many diverse acts such as Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Mamas and the Papas, Allen Toussaint, Pete Fountain, and Luther Kent and Trickbag. He now resides in Atlanta and is an active in the jazz and commercial music community. He presently serves as the director of orchestras and chair of the Fine Arts Department at Northview High School.

An ABAC alumnus, Carter is an original member of the David Brothers Band and was one of the featured performers for the 2009 First Tuesday Concert Series with his band, Kenyon Carter Connection. Carter holds bachelor’s degrees in performance and music education from Valdosta State University as well as a Master's degree from Georgia State University in jazz saxophone performance. While studying at VSU he was named "outstanding soloist" at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival.
