TIFTON —
Charles Henry Pate, 78, of Tifton, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at Tift Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chula, with the Rev. Larry Layfield and the Rev. Jimmy Cargle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Born April 6, 1934, in Turner County to the late Henry Nelson Pate and Mary Jo Hancock Pate, Mr. Pate was also preceded in death by one grandson, Lance McLemore, and one sister, Betty Lou Mercer.
Mr. Pate worked for 25 1/2 years as a warehouse salesman for Williams Brothers Wholesale Grocery. He and his wife later owned and operated the Good Neighbor Grocery and he was a bus driver for the Tift County Schools for 17 1/2 years until he retired for medical reasons. Mr. Pate loved driving the school bus and loved the children on his route. He enjoyed fishing, working in his yard and tending his flower beds. A member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chula, Mr. Pate knew no limits for love of his wife, family, grandchildren and others.
Mr. Pate is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Chloe Pate of Tifton; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra P. and Roger Greer of Raleigh, N.C. and Beth P. and the Rev. Jimmy Cargle of Chula; one son and one daughter-in-law, Gary and Pam Pate of Tifton; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Tommy and Lenora Pate of Live Oak, Fla. and Joe Pate of South Carolina; one sister and one brother-in-law, Margaret P. and George Day of Tifton; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law and their spouses, Bobby Joe and Linda Summers of Worth County, Donald and Bonnie Summers of Valdosta and Jimmy and Peggy Summers of Tifton; two sisters-in-law and their spouses, Chloe and Junior Holton of Omega and Kristi and Jack LuAllen of Tifton; and many nieces and nephews.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, 293 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Chula, GA 31733.
