Waterways seminar Saturday

TIFTON — If you like to fish, boat or just enjoy the scenery on local rivers and would like to see our waterways kept healthy for these activities, consider attending a free seminar this coming Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the NESPAL building on Rainwater Road.  An optional walk through the Arboretum will follow from 2-4 p.m.

The Willacoochee, Withlacoochee, Alapaha, and Little River System (WWALS) advocacy group, a recently formed group of concerned individuals working for watershed conservation in south Georgia, will be presenting a host of local, regional and state speakers on issues pertaining to regional rivers.

Speakers include:  Neill Herring, a conservation lobbyist at the Georgia General Assembly who will be speaking on The Political Economy of Water Conservation in Georgia; Jesslyn Shields with the Georgia River Network who will present a talk on River Protection Success Stories in Georgia; Babe McGowan, a forester who will present on Best Management Practices for Riparian Ecosystems; Bret Wagenhorst, who will talk on using economic development as a waterway preservation tool; and Karan Rawlins with the University of Georgia, who will be speaking on using smartphone apps to help document invasive species in regional watersheds.

WWALS president Dave Hetzel is hoping to have a great turnout for this educational event.  A potluck lunch is planned.  For more information go to www.wwals.net and click on Events.
