Exhibit celebrates 'America's Roots Music'

DARIEN — A Smithsonian Museum exhibit focusing on the early traditions of folk music opened Saturday in Darien for a special showing of works by local artists inspired by music.

One of the groups performing Saturday, the Sea Singers, was at a Tifton Love Affair several years and was seen and heard by local residents.

Gazette/CNHI Travel Writer Christine Tibbetts was on hand to take photos and collect information for an upcoming story.

The exhibit will run through Sept. 1 and will include special speakers, music and more.

The exhibition has made or will make stops in Calhoun, Perry, Darien, Moultrie, Toccoa, Bremen, Thomson, Nashville, Americus, Waycross and LaGrange between April 2012 and November 2013.

During Saturday’s events, Frankie Quimby of the Sea Island Singers received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Artistic Significance for Preservation of Gullah Geechee Culture.
