TIFTON —
The 37th annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show and conference, normally held in Albany, is being held in Tifton this year at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today. The show is sponsored by the Georgia Peanut Commission in cooperation with the University of Georgia.
Several types of farm equipment was displayed on the front lawn of the conference center Wednesday morning in preparation of today’s event. Some equipment was also moved inside the auditorium.
Kim Rutland, director of the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, said approximately 1,700 people are expected to attend. There will be over 90 vendors at the show.
According to a recent Tifton Gazette article on the event, the one-day show offers farmers a full day to view the products and services of exhibitors and a day of education. The Georgia Peanut Commission will present a short program beginning at 11:15 a.m. that will cover award presentations and other special recognitions. A free luncheon will follow for all peanut farmers in attendance and an opportunity for farmers to win more than $40,000 in door prizes.
The University of Georgia will present educational peanut production seminars throughout the day from 9 a.m. until 2:20 p.m. Topics focus on peanut cultivars, disease management, weed control, insect management, precision ag, maturity determination, marketing options and more.
An Industry Seed Seminar will also be held at 2:30 p.m. during the show. This event is sponsored by the American Peanut Shellers Association, Peanut Foundation, Southern Peanut Farmers Federation and the Georgia Peanut Commission. Growers will be able to learn about farm saved seed, peanut varieties available for 2013 and calcium sources and timing of application for peanuts.
Farmers will also have the opportunity to earn credit towards their private or commercial pesticide applicators certification.
Tours of research facilities on the UGA Tifton Campus will begin at 10 a.m. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the new Georgia Peanut Commission headquarters located at 445 Fulwood Blvd. in Tifton at the conclusion of the show until 5:30 p.m.
The Georgia Peanut Commission, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, will hold a blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center during the show.
At the close of the day, the presentation of the Grand Door Prize donated by KMC will be presented to one lucky peanut grower.
