TCHS swim teams each finish second in region

TIFTON — The Tift County Blue Devil and Lady Devil swim teams each finished second in the Region 1-AAAAAA swim meet held Saturday in Douglas.

After winning the Region 1-AAAAA title in 2012, the Lady Devils came within one point of back-to-back league titles. Camden edged Tift, 92-91, at Saturday’s event.

Coffee won the boys’ 1-AAAAAA title with 109.50 points, Tift finished second with 70.

Tift had several individual first place finishes at the region swim meet.

Sophomore Katelyn Seymour won the 200 freestyle; junior Mary Shoup won the 200 intermediate and 500 freestyle for girls; junior Hunter Cross won the 500 freestyle for boys; and junior Annalee Atwater won the 100 freestyle.

The relay team of senior Kendal King, Seymour, Shoup and Atwater won the 400 freestyle.

Finishing in second for Tift in individual events were Seymour in the 100 backstroke; freshman Hank McElroy in the 200 and 500 freestyle events; senior SK Bowen in the 50 freestyle; and Atwater in the 100 butterfly.

Finishing second in relay events were King, Bowen, Shoup and Atwater in the 200 freestyle; senior JP Short, senior Will Byers, junior Hunter Cross and senior Benjamin Deen in the 200 medley; and Short, junior Connor Jacobson, Cross and Deen in the 400 freestyle relay.

Finishing third in individual events were Short in 200 intermediate and 100 backstroke; King in the 50 and 100 freestyles; and Cross in the 100 butterfly.

Other scorers for Tift were Katie Arnold in the 100 backstroke, Alex Hardy in the 200 freestyle, Deen in the 50 and 100 freestyles; Madi Honeycutt in the 200 intermediate and 500 freestyle; Madeline Strickland in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle; Drew Wyatt in the 200 and 500 freestyles; Bryce Cross in the 500 freestyle; Jacobson in the 100 butterfly; and Dylan Holloway in the 100 backstroke.

Madi Honeycutt, Annalee Atwater, Mary Shoup, Kendal King, SK Bowen, Alex Hardy, Katelyn Seymour, Benjamin Deen, Hunter Cross, Connor Jacobson, JP Short and Will Byers have all qualified to swim at the state meet, which will be held at Georgia Tech, Feb. 8-9.

Coach Ellen Mullis was happy with her team’s performance Saturday.

She said, "It was the best 2nd place I have ever coached. We left it all in the pool and I couldn't have asked for more."
