School liasons play key role in education

TIFTON — The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence exists to foster and enhance academic excellence in the Tift County Schools. Over its 25 years of existence, the Foundation has travelled a variety of avenues toward that goal. Along the way, it became apparent that two-way communication between the Foundation and the 13 schools it serves is critical.

Consequently, a liaison system was developed. Handpicked individuals generously volunteer their time and talents. and principals and board members are included in the selection process. Liaisons bear the responsibility of representing each school’s academic needs to the Foundation on one hand, while assisting schools in taking advantage of the various Foundation programs on the other.

Currently, it is the season for teachers to apply for Incentive Grants. Tammie Smith with the BOE has recently sent out that information. The liaisons will follow up with principals and teachers to encourage grant applications and make sure guidelines are available and the submission deadline is known.

The Incentive Grants Committee, headed by P. J. Kemeness, has requested $20,000 to fund grants in 2013. Over the years, the Foundation has awarded  628 grants totaling $400,000.

The current list of Foundation Liaisons by school are:
