The weekend was a successful one for Tiftarea wrestlers as several individuals placed in the top five, including one state champion, and two teams finished ranked in the top 10.
The individual state champion belongs to the Berrien Rebels and Hunter Kelley, who won the 120 lb. division in Class AA. In the finals, Kelley defeated Christopher Harvey of Riverside Military Academy, 8-6.
The Irwin County Indians and Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes were the two ranked in the final poll by Score Atlanta, both earning No. 7. They had the most wrestlers place in the top five among area schools, both having four.
Fitzgerald’s squad was led by state runner-up LeManuel Kittrell, who competed at 160. He was edged in the finals by Social Circle’s Jeremy Tyson, 12-11. Walter McElroy came in third at 182 lbs., defeating J.D. Rogers of Toombs in his final match, 5-3.
Carl Salter came in fourth at 195 lbs. He lost to Chattahoochee County’s Jacob Afoa, 9-3, in his last match. Vontarius Smith (145 lbs.) came in fifth.
Irwin had three wrestlers finish third individually. Denzel Scott (106 lbs.) won a major decision over Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s Trent Johnson, 19-6. Evan Paulk’s third place finish at 145 was capped by his win over Walker’s Justin Schoettler, 6-3. Sam Tucker, who recently became Irwin’s all-time wins leader, pinned First Presbyterian Day’s Martin Wilson to wind up the 285 lbs. tournament.
The other Indian in the top five was Griffin Walker who came in fifth at 126 lbs.
The Turner County Rebels had three in the top five in Class A. Miguel Jackson was top finisher, coming in third at 120 lbs. His final match was a victory over St. Anne-Pacelli’s C.J. Bayfosis, 7-6. Wesley Poke and Alton Lawson both finished fifth, at 132 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.
The Cook Hornets sent one wrestler in the state tournament this season, Raheem Coxfield. Coxfield finished fifth at 170 lbs. in Class AA.
