United Way plans amazing race

TIFTON — United Way of South Central Georgia is busy plotting the course for an ‘amazing race’ through Tifton, providing participants a fast-paced adventure through the work of United Way and some of its partner agencies. Registration for the event is free.

“This format provides us an exciting way to feature the great work of many partners in a short time, and we anticipate a lot of fun as teams work together to navigate the course and complete the tasks encountered along the way,” said Sabrina Rouse, president of the local United Way Board of Directors.

Patterned after the CBS reality show of the same name, United Way’s Amazing Race 2012 will start at the Neighborhood Service Center, 2737 Central Ave. S, at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26. Teams will sign in between 8:30 and 9:00 and can enjoy a continental breakfast prior to beginning the race. The race is designed to last three to four hours, ending around 12:30 p.m. with a free cookout for all participants.

During the race, teams will follow clues leading them to agency and program sites where they will complete a series of tasks as they go. These tasks are designed to highlight the community impact of each agency and require a variety of problem-solving skills. Some tasks provide quick volunteer support to an agency while others focus racers on the significance of the social issues being addressed.

“United Way and affiliated agencies provide solutions to a diverse set of difficulties facing today’s families. We suspect participants will be thrilled to learn about the deep community impact of partners like the Tifton Soup Kitchen, Kids’ Advocacy Coalition and others,” said Greg Millette, executive director of United Way. “Some may even find a place for ongoing service through the giving of their time or treasure. Everyone will undoubtedly finish the race with a new appreciation of what it means to ‘Live United’.”

The race can be run by teams of two or three. Individuals wishing to race will be paired with others as much as possible on the morning of the race. Each team is responsible for providing its own transportation during the race and expected to follow all laws related to driving and parking. All participants will be required to sign a release of liability form prior to racing. Use of smart phones and devices is allowed but not necessary to complete the course. Each member of the winning team will receive both a $25 restaurant gift card and also $100 from United Way accounts to give to the United Way partner agency of their choice.

Registration forms are available at the United Way office, 211 W. Fourth St., or can be mailed or faxed by request to Greg Millette at 382-2881. Registration can also be completed on the United Way website at http://uway-socenga.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=2. This registration link can also be found at the United Way’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/uway.socenga. Registration must be completed no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, June 22.

Contact Greg Millette at 382-2881 with any questions or comments.
