Annual Father-Daughter Dance to be held Thursday at YMCA

TIFTON — It’s that time of year again for young girls to put on their princess dresses and enjoy a evening of fun with that special man in their life — their father. Tiftarea YMCA’s 11th annual Father-Daughter Majestic Ball will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center, located at 15 RDC Road. This event is open to the public. All fathers (or father figures) are invited to attend with their daughters.

The cost is $35 per couple and $15 for each additional daughter. Tickets can be purchased at the new YMCA location at 1657 S. Carpenter Road and Creation Station at 711 W. Second St. Tickets will also be available at the door for $40 and $20 for each additional daughter. However, people are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance.

Lindy Bengston, chairwoman of the father-daughter dance, said an estimate of 600 people attended last year’s dance.

“It was a great turnout,” she stated, noting that it’s normal to have that many people come out.

Due to the Y opening at its new location recently, the dance is being held at a later date this year than usual, she said. This year’s dance will have a royal theme.

Bengston stated, “There will be a lot of pink and gold satin.”

The daughters are encouraged to wear their “prettiest princess dresses,” she said, and the recommended attire for fathers is coat and tie. For the first time, a candy bar will be set up at the event. Other activities will include a dance contest with prizes for first, second and third place winners; spin-the-wheel where participants can win prizes such as donated gift certificates from local restaurants and stuffed animals; and local photographer Sidney Cromer, who donates his time each year, will be taking photos — guests will be able to take home a complimentary 4x6 photo (picture packets will also be available for purchase).

Flowers will be provided for the fathers to give to their daughters. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served. Local band East Beach Blues, which Jimmy Moore, CEO of the Y, is a member of, will provide the entertainment; each year they donate their time to play at the event.

Also, Bengston said at the event, they will be raffling off an American Girl Store Atlanta Weekend Getaway Package with doll included. This package was donated by Patty and Monty Veazey. Fathers can purchase a raffle ticket for $10 to win this prize for their daughters. Bengston said the package also includes enjoying tea at the Atlanta store and a night stay at the Marriott. She stated that it’s a great experience for a young girl.

She added that five names were drawn from the first 50 people to sign up for the dance to win complimentary hair and makeup from Mane Attraction Salon at 334 S. Main St. The lucky winners are eight-year-old Kayla Lang, eight-year-old Sarah Cook, nine-year-old Laura Lee Jones, five-year-old Patty Gail Passmore and seven-year-old Lilly Feathston.

The two biggest sponsors for this year’s father-daughter dance are Checkers and Tifton Woman’s Center.

“This is our biggest fundraiser every year, and we rely on sponsors and donations,” Bengston said.
