“Tifton is a very friendly city,” they said.
“Everyone will be welcoming and you’ll just be overwhelmed by folks just stopping by to say hello,” I was told.
I figured that to be a bit of an exaggeration -- after all, everyone brags about their hometown, right?
But then my mother and I spent a little while shopping in a local store, where we were greeted a multitude of times by folks doing just that -- saying hello. We joked about how I wasn’t in the big city any more.
On my first day on the job, I received several e-mails from local folks, most of whom I haven’t met face-to-face yet, welcoming me to town. Then I had the delightful experience of meeting Mrs. Eunice Mixon, who treated me to lunch -- and to some of the best conversation I’ve had with anyone in a while. She is truly a treasure here in Tifton.
Then there are my coworkers. They have been very welcoming as well, making me feel right at home.
I come from a small town, and I know that in many small towns, if you’re not from there, well, you just never quite fit in or feel at home. I feel quite sure that’s not going to be the case here.
So if you see me out and about, please get my attention and let’s chat. (You’ll know it’s me. Just look for the orange hair.) I want to know what you think about the paper as it is, and about the changes you’ll see happening in the coming weeks. I want to hear your ideas, as well as your criticisms.
I especially want to hear from you if you have story ideas or news tips. As much as us news folks try to have eyes and ears everywhere, there are still gaps. Your input is invaluable.
Look for me shopping, at church or pumping gas, and give me a holler. I look forward to getting to know you, and to making sure that when you pick up The Gazette, you’re holding the best source of information on Tifton and the surrounding area.

Girls basketball had long road to equality
When Georgia decided in 1945 to play a girls state basketball tournament, Macon Telegraph writer Sam Glassman was in favor, writing that the district tournaments that had always been held were just as strenuous. Days later, though, he wondered about the mental strain it was causing the players.

Southern problems...some folks got’em
I was able to take a trip down to Tampa this past weekend with my mom to see my niece in her dance recital. We didn’t get to see her dance in her recital. She kept saying she was sick, and we all kept saying, “You’ll be OK...it’s just nerves.”
